In recent years, Matt Ryan has excelled in a specific quarterback category and the Indianapolis Colts will benefit if he continues to do so.

Matt Ryan is officially the starting quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts. He hasn’t made it to the regular season yet but he has completed the team’s offseason program. From OTAs to minicamp, Matt Ryan established himself as QB1 and a leader in Indianapolis.

Ryan’s new coaches and teammates have showered the quarterback in compliments since he’s arrived. Everyone has been impressed by his leadership, his preparation, his accuracy, and so much more. All of the comments bring a great deal of excitement to the Colts for next season.

Once the games begin, the Colts will have even more reason to be excited. Everyone will begin to see how good Ryan actually is in terms of helping the team win games. If his past is any indication, Ryan should bring a brand of quarterback play that contributes to winning.

According to PFF, in the last two seasons, Matt Ryan has the third-fewest turnover-worthy plays when kept clean. That level of ball security will be appreciated in Indianapolis.

Matt Ryan will protect the ball for the Colts

Turnover-worthy plays are plays that result in a fumble in the pocket, an interceptable pass, or an interception that is the quarterback’s fault. It’s essentially a way to measure what quarterbacks are careless with the ball and which ones do a great job of keeping the ball out of harm’s way.

In the last two years, Matt Ryan has been one of the best at protecting the football, having only 13 turnover-worthy plays when kept clean. If he keeps this up with the Colts, they should win a lot of games.

The Colts have a solid offensive line, and if the right tackle position can get figured out between all the new additions, Ryan should be kept relatively clean. That means he should be able to limit his turnover-worthy plays.

With an elite run game, and what’s shaping up to be a great defense, the Colts will be able to go far if Matt Ryan can protect the football while creating a productive passing game.
