Colts should retire Reggie Wayne’s No. 87

Something else that made the Manning Era special was Manning’s pass catchers. One of those pass-catchers was wide receiver, Reggie Wayne.

Wayne was drafted by Indy in the first round of the 2001 Draft and he was added to a talented offense and eventually developed into an elite professional.

Wayne started his career with 345 receiving yards as a rookie. That number increased to 716 in year two and 838 in year three. It wasn’t until Wayne’s fourth season in the NFL that he broke the 1000-yard mark.

Once he did, Wayne never looked back. After going for 1,210 yards in 2004, Reggie strung together seven consecutive 1000-yard seasons and had eight total in a span of nine seasons. That also includes when he led the league in receiving in 2007 with 1,510 yards.

In his 14 seasons with the Colts, Wayne made six Pro Bowls, played in 211 games, and caught 1,070 passes for 14,345 yards and 82 touchdowns. He is second all-time in franchise history in receiving yards, receptions, and receiving touchdowns.

Wayne is also 10th on the NFL’s all-time receiving yards list. He will eventually be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and his 87 jersey number should also be retired by the Colts.
