Robert Mathis knows the perfect person to help him develop Colts defensive linemen

Robert Mathis is helping the defensive linemen for the Indianapolis Colts develop but there’s another great voice he thinks would help.

During his time with the Indianapolis Colts, Robert Mathis established himself as one of the greatest pass rushers of all time. His 123 sacks are the most in franchise history and 27th in league history.

Since retiring, Robert Mathis has taken on the responsibility of passing his pass-rush knowledge on to the next generation. That includes working with the current defensive lineman for the Colts.

Speaking about this on Twitter, Mathis recently said, “They’re in my city so they’re on my watch!” He is committed to helping Indianapolis have a dominant pass rush again.

However, Mathis also made clear that there’s one other legend that these young guys can learn from. That’s the man that helped Mathis get after the quarterback in his playing days: Dwight Freeney.

Robert Mathis endorses Dwight Freeney teaching Colts

Dwight Freeney was drafted by Indianapolis one year before Mathis. He’s also second in franchise history with 107.5 sacks but one spot ahead of Mathis on the all-time list with 125.5 career sacks.

Like Mathis, Freeney was an elite pass rusher during his time with the Colts. His trademark move was a spin that worked like magic as he got past offensive linemen and to the quarterback.

Both fans and Mathis would love to see Freeney put on a clinic where he’s teaching the current pass rushers for the Colts how to perfect the spin.

With DeForest Buckner returning, the addition of Yannick Ngakoue, and the development of young players like Kwity Paye, the Colts probably have the best defensive line that they’ve had in recent years.

Additionally, the team has been adamant about building the depth by drafting guys like Dayo Odeyingbo, Eric Johnson, and Curtis Brooks.

With the tutelage of Robert Mathis, and possibly Dwight Freeney, this unit should be prepared to dominate opposing offenses next season.
