Colts could bring in Cam Newton as a backup

Indianapolis signing Cam Newton would certainly create a lot of headlines, and while it’s unlikely, it may not be completely out of the realm of possibilities.

Newton has had a rough road in the NFL the last few seasons after being surprisingly cut by the Carolina Panthers in 2020. That road led him to the New England Patriots and back to Carolina where he was challenged with leading struggling teams.

Newton was unable to consistently elevate teams as he did back during his time as the league’s MVP, and as a result, some think his time as a starter in the NFL is over.

This is something that Newton himself has addressed. He says that he will always come and compete to be a starter but he doesn’t have a problem being a backup, especially for a quality team.

The Colts are a good team and they have decided on Matt Ryan as their starter. If Indianapolis wanted a safe insurance policy for the quarterback position, they could sign Newton and let him be QB2.

In the last couple of seasons, Newton has flashed the ability that once made him the best player in the NFL. If Indy signed him, he would immediately be one of the best backups in the league.

The hope would be that he never has to play, but if he does, Indy’s ability to compete as a team shouldn’t be impacted much.
