The first selection for the Indianapolis Colts in the 2022 NFL Draft will be No. 42 overall. What kind of player can Indy get at that spot?

The 2022 NFL Draft is almost here and the Indianapolis Colts are scheduled to join the party on day two with their first selection at No. 42 overall.

Indy gave up its first-round pick when they acquired Carson Wentz from the Philadelphia Eagles but they were able to move up from 47 to 42 when they traded Wentz to the Washington Commanders.

It is unlikely that the Colts will trade into the first round, so fans can expect that their first selection will be in the second round as scheduled, the 42nd overall.

While that means 41 talented prospects will already be off the board, there should still be plenty more for Indianapolis to choose from. Especially since this is considered a deep draft class at multiple positions.

History also shows that drafting at 42 overall isn’t a bad spot to find talent that can come in and impact immediately. It has been done historically and in recent years.

Let’s take a look at the last five players selected no. 42 overall to see what caliber of player the Colts can expect to land.

5. Miami Dolphins tackle Liam Eichenberg – 2021 Draft

In last year’s Draft, the Miami Dolphins selected offensive tackle Liam Eichenberg out of Notre Dame. Eichenberg was drafted to help Miami’s struggling offensive line.

He ultimately started 16 games for the Dolphins and played in all 17 as a rookie. Throughout his first season, he had some uneven performances that left Miami still needing to build up the offensive line.

The Dolphins added Terron Armstead this offseason and Eichenberg may still start for Miami at right tackle. His career is still young so the selection can’t be fully evaluated but it wasn’t an immediate home run.

Considering that the Colts are in the market for a long-term left tackle, if they select one at No. 42, the hope would be that he can immediately thrive.
