Stephon Gilmore may be next big addition to Colts defense
The Indianapolis Colts may sign Stephon Gilmore after bringing in the veteran cornerback for a free agency visit.
The theme of free agency for the Indianapolis Colts has been defense. All of the team’s external signings have been for veteran defenders.
It appears as if the Colts have more defensive signings in mind after it was reported on Wednesday that cornerback, Stephon Gilmore, visited with the team.
Gilmore has been waiting out free agency and is now one of the biggest available names. Throughout the offseason, he has been linked to several teams but nothing serious.
Colts meet with Stephon Gilmore
Gilmore will be turning 32 at the beginning of the season and it will be his 11th year in the NFL. However, he is still playing high-caliber football.
In the last four seasons, Gilmore was selected to the Pro Bowl every year and was first-team All-Pro in 2018 and 2019. He also was the defensive player of the year in 2019.
Over that span, Gilmore also partially tore his quad and was traded from the New England Patriots to the Carolina Panthers. Part of the reason he was traded was because of his demand for a new contract.
It’s not clear what exactly the numbers were, but it’s safe to assume he wanted a nice raise after being named the best defender in the league.
After a short stint with his hometown Carolina Panthers, Gilmore hit the market and was free to get any contract he could negotiate. There’s no telling if he has a high asking price, but if the Colts are interested, he probably doesn’t.
Indianapolis has a huge need at the cornerback position, especially since Rock Ya-Sin was traded away. However, Indy hasn’t really been the biggest spender in free agency.
It does, however, seem that Gilmore may be a priority because Josina Anderson reported that the Colts sent a jet to Gilmore so that he could visit with the team.
If Indianapolis can finalize a deal that brings Gilmore to Indy, this will address another need and give the Colts fewer things to worry about in the Draft.
