The Indianapolis Colts have acquired veteran quarterback, Matt Ryan, in a trade with the Atlanta Falcons.
The biggest question of the offseason for the Indianapolis Colts was who would start at quarterback next season. It was a question the team took a while to address but Indy has finally arrived at an answer after trading for Matt Ryan.
In exchange for Ryan, the Colts sent Atlanta a 2022 third-round pick. Indy had two third-round picks after acquiring one in the Carson Wentz trade.
Ryan will turn 37 in May and will be entering his 15th year in the league next season. All of his previous years were played with the Atlanta Falcons, starting every game he played in with Atlanta since 2008.
The 2016 MVP will now join Indianapolis for the backend of his career and hopes to help Indy to a playoff run.
Colts trade for Matt Ryan
While the Falcons haven’t been as successful in the years following the Super Bowl 51 appearance and Ryan’s MVP, Matt has still been a quality passer.
In each of the five seasons since 2016, Ryan has completed better than 64% of his passes and passed for 4,000 yards each year except last season, when he threw for 3,968 yards.
Also in that span, Ryan has thrown 127 touchdowns to just 56 interceptions.
Now, Ryan will join a talented Colts roster that is a few pieces away from having a title-contending team. With Jonathan Taylor in the backfield and the talent on the defensive side of the ball, this will be one of the best rosters that Ryan has played with in recent years.
However, Indy still has some holes it needs to fill to help Ryan out. The Colts’ main focus should be finding a left tackle and acquiring weapons for Ryan to throw to.
But for now, fans can exhale knowing that Indy has a quarterback for next season. At Ryan’s age, with two remaining years on his contract, he isn’t Indianapolis’ quarterback of the future. However, he can help the team remain competitive for the next couple of seasons.
