The Indianapolis Colts have finalized a trade to send quarterback Carson Wentz to the Washington Commanders.

The day of the Super Bowl it was reported that the Indianapolis Colts were likely to trade or release quarterback Carson Wentz, now, that has officially happened.

Just a week before the start of the new league year, Indianapolis and the Washington Commanders have agreed on a deal that will send Wentz to D.C. in exchange for multiple mid-round picks.

Washington will take on all of Wentz’s contract and the deal will help Indy enter free agency with around $70 million in cap space.

Colts trade Carson Wentz to Washington in exchange for picks

Wentz was brung to Indianapolis just one season ago when Indy sent a 2021 third-round pick and a 2022 conditional second-round pick that elevated to a first after Wentz played in every game for the Colts.

During his one season in Indy, Wentz started all 17 games, throwing for 3,563 yards, 27 touchdowns, and seven interceptions while helping Indianapolis to a 9-8 record.

Indianapolis missed the postseason after losing two win-and-in games the last two weeks of the season. In both games, Wentz underwhelmed and essentially opened the door that would leave to his exit out of Indy.

Now after just one season, Wentz is traded to another team and Indianapolis is left looking for another quarterback.

Where does this leave the Colts?

This trade is the third major quarterback domino of the offseason. On Tuesday, Aaron Rodgers decided to stay with the Green Bay Packers and Russell Wilson was traded to the Denver Broncos.

Now with Wentz leaving, Indy has no clear answer at the quarterback position. On the roster is Sam Ehlinger, who will be entering his second season. It’s unlikely that Indianapolis enters the season with Ehlinger as the starter.

Expect the Colts to be active in the veteran quarterback free-agent market with names like Jameis Winston and Mitch Trubisky available while they also explore a possible trade for Jimmy Garoppolo.
