The Indianapolis Colts continue to fill out the defensive coaching staff, hiring another former player in Mike Mitchell.

The Indianapolis Colts recently hired Cato June to be an assistant linebackers coach for Indy. June played four seasons with Indy from 2003 to 2006.

Now, Indianapolis has added another Colts alum to the defensive coaching staff, hiring former NFL defensive back, Mike Mitchell, as an assistant secondary coach.

Mitchell played one season with Indianapolis in 2018 before deciding to retire.

Mike Mitchell returns to Colts as coach

Mitchell only played his final season with Indy but he had an extensive career in the NFL. He was drafted out of Ohio by the Raiders in 2009.

Mitchell played four seasons with the Raiders and then joined the Carolina Panthers for one season in 2013. He eventually got into a stride with the Pittsburgh Steelers, starting four seasons at free safety from 2014 to 2017.

He then joined the Colts and played his final season in the NFL. Through his 10 seasons, he played in 145 games, recording 514 tackles, 11 interceptions, nine forced fumbles, and 7.5 sacks.

The assistant defensive backs coaching job with Indianapolis is Mitchell’s first coaching opportunity since retiring from playing. He will be working with Colts defensive backs coach Ron Milus.

Mitchell joins a talented staff under Gus Bradley and will be lucky to coach a talented group of defensive backs.

Indy’s secondary is loaded with young talents like Kenny Moore, Julian Blackmon, Rock Ya-Sin, and Isaiah Rodgers. All are relatively early in their careers and still growing into their potential and Mitchell will be able to use his experience to help them get there.

This is also a great first destination in Mitchell’s coaching career. If he has aspirations to rise through the ranks, he is around a quality staff and a part of a team that is poised for success.
