Divisional Round shows Colts have no chance without an elite quarterback
The draft is where all of your teams find the future of the franchise. Do you want to be destined for greatness for years to come or just for the short term? If a team is looking for success longer than just a few years, draft the quarterback you believe in.
The top teams in the NFL found their quarterback in the draft. The AFC playoff quarterbacks that were drafted by their team included Mahomes (’17-10th), Allen (’18-7th), Burrow (’20-1st), Carr (’14-36th), Jones (’21-15th), and Roethlisberger (’04-11th). All but one team in the playoffs drafted their quarterback. Those six quarterbacks combine for three Super Bowl wins, but Mahomes, Allen, Burrow, and Jones are far from over.
Quarterbacks Not Looking Great in 2022 Draft Class
This year’s quarterback draft class doesn’t look too exciting, though. Quarterbacks coming out this year are Kenny Pickett, Matt Corral, Malik Willis, Carson Strong, Sam Howell, and Desmond Ridder.
Two or three of those quarterbacks are likely going to be gone in the first round. This will likely leave the Colts to draft either Strong or Ridder in the second round. That’s assuming the Colts don’t invest in another position like EDGE or wide receiver.
Colts can wait until 2023 to draft a QB
If the Colts were to hold off one year to draft a quarterback and continue to build pieces for a Wilson-style draft, they could be set for a decade. Building all of the pieces around the quarterback might be best, allowing Wentz to prove that he can be the quarterback of the future.
The 2023 quarterback class includes Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud, and Spencer Rattler. The Colts will also have a first-round pick in 2023 as well.
Colts stay stagnant and miss opportunities
Chris Ballard must be aggressive this off-season or he could be in trouble. There are two options on the table for the Colts this season. Commit to Carson Wentz for another season and hope he improves or find your quarterback via trade or in the later rounds of the draft.
Both options are not looking great. Without an elite-level quarterback, the Colts have zero chance to win a Super Bowl within the next decade.
