Denico Autry made Colts look silly during Divisional Weekend
Former Indianapolis Colts defender, Denico Autry, had a standout playoff performance for the Tennessee Titans.
In the Divisional round of the playoffs, the top-seeded Tennessee Titans were upset by the Cincinnati Bengals, 19-16. Despite losing, Tennessee has an impressive defensive performance.
The Titans’ defense recorded nine sacks, tying a single-game playoff record. One of the defenders who had multiple sacks was Denico Autry, with 1.5 sacks in the game.
Autry just concluded his first season with Tennessee. Through the regular season, he recorded nine sacks, the second-highest for the Titans.
While this is great for Autry and Tennessee, it’s a terrible look for the Indianapolis Colts. Autry spent the last three seasons with Indy before leaving in free agency last offseason.
Denico Autry makes Colts regret not re-signing him
One of the Colts’ biggest weaknesses this season was pass rush. Indianapolis depended on a lot of young guys and they didn’t consistently get the job done.
The Colts struggled to get after the quarterback and they also didn’t have enough defensive line depth.
The reality of Indy’s struggles made watching Autry ball out a painful experience for Colts fans, especially since it seemed like Autry was willing to return to Indianapolis.
When Autry first inked his deal with Tennessee, he made comments that alluded to Indianapolis not being willing to pay him for his worth. He took the situation personally and said it would show in the two yearly matchups.
The way things played out this year, Chris Ballard and the rest of Indy’s front office have to be regretful of how they handled things. The Titans were the no. 1 seed in the AFC and the Colts missed the playoffs.
While it was a lot of factors that went into those outcomes, pass rush was a big one. Tennessee has one of the best pass-rushing defenses in the NFL while Indianapolis has one of the worst. Indy essentially gave the Titans one of their best pass rushers.
Hopefully, the Colts learn from their mistakes the last offseason and are more aggressive in making moves this time around. The decisions made in spring make all the difference in what happens in the fall.
