Colts lack depth at safety position

There is a reason that Julian Blackmon was a devastating loss for Indianapolis. There is no depth at the safety position, at all. When Khari Willis went down mid-season, it created a larger issue.

The Colts were forced to use players like All-Pro George Odum, Andrew Sendejo, Jahleel Addae, and Josh Jones. That’s not really a deep secondary unit.

While Blackmon should be back from his Achilles injury next season, Sendejo, Addae, and Jones will all likely be gone, leaving a struggling unit even more bare.

When the Colts have both Blackmon and Willis healthy, the unit is dangerous. There can’t be holes in the defense when either is resting or hurt, though. Indianapolis needs to find youth and depth in the draft to continue building up a strong secondary.

Finding a safety in the early or late rounds is possible. I’d keep my eye on players like Maryland’s Nick Cross or Florida A&M’s Markquese Bell.
