The worst thing from Colts’ win against Jaguars: Third Down Offense

This isn’t just listed for symmetry; as great as the Colts’ defense was on the third down, the offense was equally bad. Statistically speaking, they were slightly worse, only converting 4-of-15 attempts.

The Indianapolis offense was unable to convert three third down attempts that were five yards or fewer, while also having five total three and outs. When the defense was playing well early, the offense’s inability to get going is what left the door open for Jacksonville.

If this team can’t convert on third down, they will have an extremely low ceiling. While it would be great to rarely see third down, that isn’t realistic, especially with this offense. So that means they have to figure out a way to be effective, specifically on third and short—yardage that should be expected from any offense.

With a powerful back like Jonathan Taylor and a mobile quarterback like Carson Wentz, short-yardage gains should be ‘a gimme.’ Considering the playoff aspirations of this team, third and manageable distances need to be converted at an efficient clip as well.

The Colts were able to win in spite of this third down performance this past Sunday, but they won’t always be as fortunate. If Indianapolis wants to beat the Bills on Sunday, it’s going to start with the offense extending drives.
