5. Colts QB Sam Ehlinger

In the sixth round, with the 218th pick, Indianapolis selected quarterback Sam Ehlinger and it didn’t make fans feel much of anything. For one, it was the sixth round, and Tom Bradys are rare. But really, fans knew it was a slim chance of Ehlinger seeing the field.

Ehlinger was however able to beat out Jacob Eason for the spot of back-up quarterback. For that reason alone, this selection is a success, because the Colts feel they upgraded their reserve.

GRADE: C+ (He won the job!)

6. Colts WR Michael Strachan

Michael Strachan was selected in the seventh round with the 229th pick and he brought a lot of intrigue. At 6-5 and 225 pounds, fans were excited to see what the big receiver could offer.

Strachan created a lot of buzz in camp and was able to make the final roster, but after contributing some in the first two games, his playing time has diminished significantly.

It’s hard to say this was a bad pick, because considering the placement, Strachan was able to create buzz. However, he couldn’t capitalize on it. The glimpses that he provided leave the door open for an improved year two.

GRADE: B-

7. Colts OL Will Fries

Heading into the draft, offensive line was one of Indianapolis’ top needs…but unfortunately, most of the prospects they had high on their board didn’t make it to them. That forced the Colts to go in different directions with their first six picks, before grabbing Will Fries with their last, No. 248.

Fries was able to earn a spot on the final active roster, but he hasn’t seen any game time. He does provide the offensive line with some depth, so it’s not a wasted pick. Despite being selected in the seventh round, Fries had the talent to make the team and can continue to learn and possibly contribute in the future.

GRADE: B (Best you can expect here…)

More. Best and worst thing from the Colts’ win on Sunday. light
