If you can say one thing about Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay, it’s that he doesn’t lack confidence in himself or his team. Even as the team has started off 1-4 with some gut-wrenching losses, Irsay still thinks that this group he’s put together is well-equipped to compete for championships.

While the team might be struggling at the moment, they have put their utmost faith in Frank Reich as a head coach and Chris Ballard as a general manager. Considering they have made the playoffs in two of the last three seasons, that faith is not completely misguided, even in times of trouble.

Irsay isn’t just thinking playoffs, however, as he has his eyes set on the ultimate prize. Not only does he think that Indianapolis will be a fixture in the postseason, but he also anticipates several deep runs being made with the current core.

Sitting nearly winless, Irsay guaranteed that the Colts would not only get one championship, but rather two in the next decade. Considering that this franchise won one ring despite having Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck under center for two decades, that’s certainly a very bold take to bloviate about when you are in charge of a 1-4 team.

Will Jim Irsay and the Colts compete for championships?

The Colts can at least hold their heads high when they look at the play of Carson Wentz, as despite injuries on the offensive line and some questionable depth at wide receiver, he’s been able to lead this offense with some degree of success. However, Ballard and the Colts are not as close to a title as Irsay believes, let alone two.

Ballard has been stingy about spending money on free agents, and he should be taken to task for some of the poor decisions that he has made as a drafter. This team is firmly outside of the championship tier right now, though Irsay doesn’t think it will take very long to turn things around.

The Colts need to focus on winning the AFC South, a division slipping further away from them every week, before they can focus on such grandiose designs. Wentz needs to be able to beat a division rival at home before we can start talking about knocking off Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson.

While it’s nice for the owner to be so optimistic and passionate about his team, Irsay might need to tone down the hype just a bit. If he’s expecting this defense to carry him to a title in the near future, he’s bound to be slapped in the face by the stinging sense of disappointment.
