Colts: 3 players desperate to perform vs Vikings
By Jerry Trotta
1. Sam Ehlinger
Sam Ehlinger might not completely fall under the “desperate” category after his sound preseason debut, but it’s worth noting that Jacob Eason has put together a great set of practices this week.
We’re obviously not at camp, but it sounds like Eason has really settled down after getting his first preseason action under his belt.
Colts QB Sam Ehlinger needs to keep Jacob Eason on his toes.
If you recall, there was no preseason last year, and Eason seems to be reaping the benefits of essentially taking a redshirt year to study the playbook.
That isn’t to say Eason is winning the job (he might have a slight edge), but he could definitely separate himself this weekend if Ehlinger underwhelms.
On Sunday vs the Panthers, Ehlinger went 10-of-15 for 155 yards and a bad interception. Outside of the turnover, it was a strong debut for the rookie out of Texas, who led Indy in rushing with five rushes for 35 yards before kneel downs.
Ehlinger is set to get the start against Minnesota, which means he’ll play against some starters on defense. To call this a huge opportunity for the former Longhorn is an understatement, and we’re really hoping he takes it by the scruff of the neck.
