Colts answer throwback uniform prayers with latest announcement
By Jerry Trotta
Earlier this offseason, the NFL confirmed it will start allowing teams to start wearing alternate color helmets beginning in 2022.
This paves the way for teams to either create a new look entirely, or bring back some of their iconic uniforms, which, as you would expect, is what the fans want.
When it comes to the Colts, this rule change will allow them to revive their gorgeous blue throwbacks, which, for some bizarre reason, have two horseshoes on the back of the helmet as opposed to the side where they belong.
It remains to be seen if Indianapolis will exercise this opportunity, but it would appear the franchise is on board with the whole throwback policy.
In an awesome announcement on Wednesday, the Colts confirmed they’ll be wearing their 1950s-era throwback uniforms in Week 12 against the Buccaneers.
The Colts wearing throwback uniforms in 2021 is awesome news.
Modeled after the 1956 Colts, this uniform is intended to honor the dominant Colts teams from the late 1950s, which featured stars like quarterback Johnny Unitas, halfback/flanker Lenny Moore and split end Raymond Berry, each of whom are featured in the above promo.
Of course, the organization was based in Baltimore at the time and was utterly dominant at the peak of its powers, nabbing consecutive titles in 1958 and 1959, the former of which went on to be coined the Greatest Game Ever Played when the Colts toppled the Giants in a sudden death overtime thriller and helped propel the NFL into the national powerhouse it is today.
If that’s not a reason to get excited for Week 12, then nothing is.
To paint a picture of the throwback, the blue horseshoe logo can be located on the back of the helmet, while the three-stripe pattern will slide down from the shoulders to the sleeves in a nice touch. Here’s a full look of the uniform, with DeForest Buckner modeling!
Can we just fast forward to Week 12? The NFL adding a 17th game to the schedule was controversial among players, and fans in Indy felt that first-hand when it was revealed the Colts would play Tom Brady and the reigning champion Bucs as their extra game in Week 12.
That could end up being the toughest game on Indianapolis’ schedule. However, the fact it’s at home in a (hopefully) sold out Lucas Oil Stadium AND the Colts will don arguably the most iconic uniform in franchise history for the game makes it all worthwhile.
