Colts fans will not enjoy hearing how Nick Sirianni’s interview with the Eagles went down.

What made the New England Patriots dynasty so impressive was that they were able to enjoy sustained success while routinely losing top coaching assistants to promotions with other organizations.

That annual poaching fest is part of what makes establishing a winning culture so difficult for teams, and the Indianapolis Colts learned that the hard way this week when it was reported that offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni was hired as the Eagles’ new head coach.

When you consider that Sirianni is one of the brightest young offensive minds in the sport, this will be a tough pill to swallow for Colts Nation. As if losing him wasn’t already brutal enough, however, details about how his interview came to be have started trickling out and the latest nugget is not going to sit well with fans in Indy.

Why? We’re glad you asked. Because Sirianni was vacationing with his family (!) when Philadelphia called for an interview. Unaware that they were even considering him for the job, he understandably didn’t pack any professional attire for the trip. The Eagles’ braintrust wisely decided to use this to their advantage and chose to wear casual clothes to make him feel more comfortable.

This gesture was admittedly pretty brilliant and it unsurprisingly resonated with Sirianni. As a result, the 39-year-old interviewed exceptionally well and the hiring process moved pretty quickly after that, albeit with a little bit of help from Frank Reich’s strong letter of approval.

For Colts fans who were left with a bitter taste in their mouth after reading this tidbit, we are right there with you. We get that the Eagles probably set a timetable in terms of when they wanted to officially replace Doug Pederson, but did they really have to go and interrupt Sirianni’s vacation, especially after all he went through this season in terms of being away from his family?

Again, Philly deserves all the credit for pushing the necessary buttons to get their man, but it just doesn’t sit right with us that they caught him off guard while he was on vacation, likely knowing that there’d be a somewhat urgent timestamp on their head coaching search.

They caught him in an extremely unexpected moment while he was relaxing and then played into his situation with the casual clothes. Under different circumstances, who knows what happens.
