Colts: Darius Leonard has cheeky warning for Aaron Rodgers
By Jerry Trotta
Colts LB Darius Leonard issued a feisty warning at Packers QB Aaron Rodgers ahead of Sunday’s mouthwatering matchup.
The Indianapolis Colts will face a huge test on Sunday when they welcome the Green Bay Packers to Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday. It’s a matchup that carries massive playoff implications, as both teams currently sit atop their respective divisions.
While the Packers have more of a cushion than most teams, you’d better believe they will come out looking to make a statement after barely squeaking past Jacksonville at home in Week 10. On the other side of the spectrum, Indianapolis is well rested and riding plenty of momentum on the heels of a season-defining win on the road in Tennessee last Thursday.
In the simplest of terms, it won’t take a motivational speech from the coaching staff to get the Colts up for this game, as linebacker Darius Leonard has something special to prove to Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who tabbed 49ers breakout star Fred Warner as the best linebacker in the NFL a few weeks back.
As you would expect, Leonard took these comments to heart, and his response to them during his latest media session will have fans in Indianapolis ready to run through a brick wall.
Get your popcorn ready, folks, because Leonard’s feisty warning for Rodgers suggests that he’s about to have the game of his life on Sunday. That almost sounds impossible, given how many top-drawer performances he’s delivered over the last two-plus years, but he never ceases to amaze, so why stop now?
We don’t mean to start a feud with 49ers fans, but Rodgers calling Warner the best LB in the game is ludicrous when you consider how many other worthy candidates are out there. For the sake of time, we don’t dive into the entire laundry list, but we are absolutely dumbfounded by Rodgers’ comments.
The 2018 third-round pick has admittedly emerged as a stud for San Francisco amid all of their injuries this season, but it’s honestly not worth debating whether him or Leonard, who was in the same draft class and already has an All-Pro and Pro Bowl nod on his resume, is the superior player.
While Warner’s breakout campaign deserves to have him recognized as one of the best linebackers in the sport, Leonard has long been viewed in that regard and is well on his way to being mounted on the same pedestal as Rams world-beater Aaron Donald as one of the best overall defensive players in the sport, period.
There’s levels to this sort of coronation, folks. The fact of the matter is that Rodgers poked the bear and has to face the consequences of lining up against him on Sunday, which just got a hell of a lot more interesting.
