The Colts are clearly after NDSU QB Trey Lance, and got outed via a Fan Cam.
The Indianapolis Colts believed, prior to being punched in the mouth by the Jaguars in Week 1, that they’d assembled a contender in both the short- and long-term.
After two more weeks of defensive development, while the offense seamlessly shuffled pieces around in front of Philip Rivers as the injuries mounted, it appears the team’s braintrust might’ve been onto something after all.
But after 2020 (or, possibly, 2021), there remains a gaping void in the whole blueprint. Rivers won’t be around forever, and he may end up spending less time in Indy than Cam Newton spends in New England (against all odds!). The soon-to-be-39-year-old Rivers is an adept gunslinger and an excellent mentor, but isn’t anything close to a permanent solution to the Andrew Luck void.
So it’s no surprise that Indy’s going QB shopping, even though their draft pick isn’t going to sink anywhere near Trevor Lawrence territory in 2020, as they’re likelier to win the AFC South than claw up draft boards. So who’s next? What about mobile North Dakota State threat Trey Lance, a likely back-end first-rounder who’s played exactly one showcase game in 2020, taking on Central Arkansas on Saturday night?
The Colts were among the 20 NFL teams that checked out their possible target on Saturday, and we know this because a parody “Fan Cam” in the empty stadium picked up on one of their high-ranking executives.
Funny already, but this isn’t just any scout.
As beat writer Zak Keefer pointed out, this is Indianapolis’ assistant GM Ed Dodds, who was entrusted to report back on the freelancin’ Lance.
Yup. The big guns.
Lance struggled at times on Saturday, throwing for just 149 yards on 15-of-30, racking up a pair of TDs and an interception. He also accrued 143 yards and two scores on the ground in the 39-28 comeback win.
Despite his relative struggles and a bit of a roller-coaster game, there’s a lot to like about Lance, especially where he’ll be targeted on draft board.
And after the celeb spotting on the Fan Cam we saw Saturday night, it’s tough to rule out the Colts in this pursuit. Duck your way out of camera range next time, Mr. Dodds!
Jonathan Taylor and Mo Alie-Cox just did something Colts fans haven’t seen in a decade
Indianapolis Colts RB Jonathan Taylor and TE Mo Alie-Cox accomplished something on Sunday that Indy hasn't seen since Joseph Addai and Pierre Garcon.
