With Rivers getting some much-needed weapons in the draft, the veteran quarterback no longer has any excuses to not succeed for the Colts this season.

Philip Rivers will be in Indianapolis for at least one year. It will probably be two years, but his contract is only for one. How long he eventually stays will be predicated on how well he plays in the 2020 season. If he doesn’t play well, he doesn’t have any excuses for that poor play.

The Colts made sure that Rivers has all the weapons that he needs to have a successful season in Indy. They drafted a big-bodied receiver in Michael Pittman Jr. They got an explosive, powerful back in Jonathan Taylor. Those two weapons should help him immensely.

Add in the return of a healthy T.Y. Hilton and Parris Campbell, and suddenly this passing attack looks quite potent. Perhaps the only question mark is the second tight end position. A healthy Jack Doyle gives them a good number one option and hopefully Trey Burton fills in that number two option.

The Colts’ offensive line also offers perhaps the best protection in the NFL. They are also one of the best run-blocking lines in the league as well. Marlon Mack and Taylor should continue to run the ball well, and Rivers should have plenty of time to find his receivers down the field.

The future of the quarterback position remains unclear. Jacob Eason might have a chance to be the starter once Rivers leaves, but nothing yet is set in stone. That is something they will worry about after the 2020 season is over.

Next. Way too early 2021 mock draft for the Colts. dark

Rivers is going to be 38 when he leads the Colts out onto the field. The Colts are betting on him not showing his age as he did a season ago. If the offense does fail, it won’t be anyone’s fault but Rivers. Chris Ballard has made sure of that.
