Colts 2020 mock draft 1.0
By Ryan Stano
The more I watch film of Jacob Eason, the more I like what I see. Eason has prototypical size at 6’6 227 and can make all of the throws needed. His 64% completion percentage this last season at Washington also shows he throws accurately across the field.
There has been no indication from the organization that they will move on from Jacoby Brissett. But taking Eason here doesn’t force them to. They can start Brissett next season to give him another chance at improvement and see if he is worth re-signing.
If he plays well, they will likely sign him to an extension and keep him as the franchise quarterback and keep Eason as a solid backup. If he doesn’t, the can insert Eason at anytime and have a guy to build around for the future. Having two second round picks affords the Colts this luxury.
Eason will likely get looks from other teams as well. There are a lot of teams that are unsure with their quarterback right now. But he should be available for the Colts to take at this spot. He has the maturity to either step right in right away, or sit for a year to learn.
Another position of need for the team is tight end. They will be letting Eric Ebron go in free agency and need someone to replace him. Insert Albert Okwuegbunam from Missouri. The Colts love to have a red zone threat at that position, which is what Ebron was.
Okwuegbunam had 23 touchdowns in his three years, and only accumulated 1,187 yards in that time. Most of his touchdowns were in that red zone area. He would be a great fit in that area at his 6’5 frame. He would help whatever quarterback is behind center in 2020.
The Colts only have one third round pick, but can use it to address another need on the offensive side of the ball.
