The Colts could be in the market for a quarterback in the draft. If they do, they might be able to snag this one in early second round.

The Colts don’t want to be in the market for a quarterback. They were hoping to still have Andrew Luck. They no longer do, and Jacoby Brissett wasn’t as effective as they were hoping in 2019. Because of that, they need to do their due diligence with gunslingers coming out of college.

One of those gunslingers who the Colts have been linked to is Jordan Love out of Utah State. Love has enamored scouts because of his size at 6’4 225, and his strong arm. He had a really good sophomore year, throwing for 3,567 yards and 32 touchdowns with only 6 interceptions.

The big problem is how much his play has dropped off in his junior season. He threw for about the same amount of yards, passing for 3,402. But his touchdown to interception ratio was much worse, throwing 20 touchdowns to a whopping 17 picks.

The lack of touchdowns can be attributed to him losing some wide receiver talent this season. He didn’t have as many playmakers around him. But you can’t use that excuse for the amount of interceptions he threw. 17 is a lot no matter who you have around you catching the ball.

Love is also only a career 61% passer. That lack of accuracy partly explains the large amount of interceptions this season. But that needs to be much higher if he wants to succeed at the NFL level. Because of his accuracy concerns, he might slip into the second round.

If he is there in the second round, the Colts might take him with the 34th overall pick. He has size that they love and should be durable. They can build a roster around him to succeed, and get playmakers to help increase his accuracy. A lot of short crossing routes should help too.

Of all the QB’s available in the draft, Love might make the most sense for the Colts because of where they can get him. They can use their first round pick on a left tackle if Anthony Castonzo retires, or use it for the defensive line. They might even use it on a receiver.

Bottom line is that it wouldn’t surprise me to see them take Love when the second round rolls around, and it wouldn’t be a bad pick.
