The Hall of Fame running back was on the Rich Eisen Show yesterday to talk about how his retirement was similar and dissimilar to Andrew Luck‘s.

The fallout of Andrew Luck’s retirement continues to resonate around the league. Everyone is trying to find out what this means for the Colts moving forward, and are still shocked that someone so young and talented could have retired this early.

Someone who was at the top of their game and did the same thing is Barry Sanders. The former Lions running back was the most dynamic player in the game when he abruptly retired in 1998 at the age of only 30. He had plenty left in the tank and decided to walk away from the game.

Sanders was on the Rich Eisen Show yesterday to talk about how his retirement was similar to Andrew Luck’s. He said that he thinks Luck will wrestle with his retirement for a couple of years because it’s so fresh and he is still young enough where he can play.

Sanders also says that his situation was slightly different than Luck’s in the fact that he didn’t suffer any major injuries like Luck did. He also said that if the Lions were as good as the Colts are now, it would have made his decision to walk away from the game even harder.

It’s interesting to see how a legend of the game who retired near the same age thinks about the situation. Clearly some factors were different, but both players were in the prime of their careers when they decided to walk away.
