Nick Mullens might be the best option if the Colts want to make a trade for a quarterback. Mullens played well in stretches last year in relief of Jimmy Garoppolo in San Francisco. He has played well in the preseason as well this year, and is still pretty young.

The biggest reason why this might make the most sense for the Colts is that the 49ers have a massive amount of money invested in Garoppolo. They have to keep him as the starter because he eats so much of their cap sheet up. Mullens could be had for a low price.

Mullens would be the backup this year and would have a chance to flourish next year. He is young and has experience playing in the league. He has shown he could be a good starting quarterback if given a good supporting cast. The supporting cast in Indy would qualify for that.

It would only take a 4th or 5th round pick to bring Mullens in, maybe less. If Brissett falters this year, Mullens could take over and be the franchise guy for the future. He is good enough to be on people’s radar as a franchise guy.

It’s not likely that the Colts make a trade right now with the season so close, but if they do it could be for one of these five guys.
