The Colts released their first unofficial depth chart of the season. There were some interesting players in spots, and some depth still isn’t cleared up.

The first depth charts often don’t mean too much. They are just preliminary of what the team has seen so far through OTA’s and training camp. The Colts just released their first one, but it has plenty of interesting nuggets ahead of the first preseason game on Thursday.

At wide receiver, it was very interesting to see Parris Campbell behind Chester Rogers and Zach Pascal. Both Rogers and Pascal were thought to be on the bubble of making the team. But with Rogers listed as the primary punt returner, maybe his place on the roster is solidified.

It’s also interesting to see Tyquan Lewis listed ahead of Margus Hunt as the starter at nose tackle. Both will play a lot, but Hunt was pretty good last season. It’s surprising to see Lewis, who played mostly defensive end last year as a rookie, jump ahead of him.

The defensive backfield is a jumbled up mess. Rock Ya-Sin seems to have the upper hand on Quincy Wilson for the second outside starting corner spot based on the reps in practice. But Wilson still is rotated in a bunch. It’s also surprising to see Jalen Collins in their last at the corner spot. He has played well in camp.

At safety, Khari Willis and George Odum have both seen some first team reps. Malik Hooker is most unlikely to lose his free safety spot, but Willis could jump Clayton Geathers possibly. Preseason games will likely separate these guys.

The first preseason game will likely tell us a lot more on who will play and who won’t. But right now, there is clearly a lot of close competition happening across the board.
