The Colts placed the backup running back on the PUP list, but it looks like he won’t even be on the roster soon.

Spencer Ware was signed in the offseason from the Chiefs to backup Marlon Mack. Ware was supposed to be the primary backup while others came in for a rotation. But now that plan is out the door, and Ware won’t be with the team much longer.

Ware was placed on the PUP list after having undergone ankle surgery. He is out 5-6 weeks, but he won’t stay with the Colts. The team is working on an injury settlement with him. This is all according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

This makes sense as to why the Colts worked out a couple of running backs. Akeem Hunt and Mike Gillislee were worked out, but not signed. This also gives more opportunities for Nyheim Hines and Jordan Wilkins, both of whom were slated to not see as much time on the field.

It’s unfortunate that Ware will never suit up for the Colts. He is a solid backup. But the injury settlement will ultimately be better for both teams. It will allow the Colts to get a healthier running back and still allow Ware to play this season. It’s just a shame neither knew about this before he was signed.
