The safety previously played for division rivals Jacksonville and Tennessee. Could he move on to his third AFC South team?

Johnathan Cyprien is working out with the Colts today according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. He tweeted it earlier this morning. Cyprien is a safety who specializes in stopping the run. He is typically used as an extra man in the box, which is something the Colts are exploring.

The 28 year-old safety has started every game that he has played in. But the problem for Cyprien has been injuries. He has missed some games due to an assortment of injuries. He’s missed 10 games in the five seasons he has played, and missed all of last year after a torn ACL during a drill.

A lot of the games he missed were due to a hamstring injury. Add that with the torn ACL, and his lower body seems a little big fragile. It wouldn’t seem smart to replace one injury prone strong safety, Clayton Geathers, with another one in Cyprien.

If the Colts did bring him in, Cyprien wouldn’t be handed the starting job. He would have to compete with Geathers. What Cyprien does bring is the ability to tackle in open space. In four of his five seasons played, he had over 100 tackles.

One thing he doesn’t bring though are good ball skills. He only has two interceptions in his career. He isn’t much of a coverage safety. He’s more of the hard-hitter type who will come up and be physical at the line of scrimmage. That’s something the Colts could use.

It remains to be seen how well the workout has gone. If it goes well enough, it would be expected for him to be signed today. We will keep you up to date on any possible news on this front.
