The entire defense has gone through a big change in terms of personnel. This should help the team stop the run a little better than last year.

Stopping the run has always been a problem for the Colts defense. It has been one of the things that they needed to do in the 2000’s when they had an elite offense. Their run defense got better last year, but it should be even better this season.

The main reason is that the Colts  have had their defense get infused with some young talent. A lot of that talent is in the back seven of the team. A lot of the players are heavy in pass rushing skills, but they also have the speed and physicality to stop the run.

Most of the Colts defenders are already equipped to stop the run better this year anyway because they have already had a full year in Matt Eberflus’ defense. The defense was already improved last year, but it will only get better this season.

The defensive line has been re-worked a little bit. Bringing in Justin Houston and drafting Gerri Green should help with that. So should Ben Banogu who might also play some along the defensive line. Stopping the run will make things better for the whole team.

The run was the best thing the defense did last year, actually finishing 8th in run defense. But they can always get better. Expect them to have one of the top five run defenses in 2019.
