Heading into tomorrow’s draft, there is one position they don’t really need to draft for; running back. It’s already clogged, and it’s time we sort it out.

Marlon Mack is the number one back in Indy. That much is clear now. That clarity arose after the Colts decided to not splurge and pay Le’Veon Bell to come to town. But that still leaves a somewhat clogged running back room, and that doesn’t even include some rumors that floated around.

Behind Mack is Jordan Wilkins and Nyheim Hines, rookies from last year’s draft class. They are the number two and number three backs right now, but in what order? It seems Hines took over the number two role late last year as Wilkins hardly got any snaps.

The Colts also met with Jay Ajayi early in free agency, and both parties walked away wanting to stay engaged. Clearly neither side has been engaged enough for him to sign a deal yet. But if talks continue and he does sign with the Colts after the draft, what then?

That leaves with Mack getting less snaps and Ajayi the clear number two back. He will back up Mack but still get a lot of snaps. He’s too good of a talent not to. This would also leave Wilkins as the odd man out in the running back room and likely wouldn’t see the field.

Next. Colts won't sign free agents until after draft. dark

This is a hypothetical scenario of course because Ajayi is not on the Colts’ roster right now. But it’s not an unrealistic scenario, and one the Colts might have to address sooner than you think.
