The Colts’ offense will have a brand new weapon this season. But what is the best way to use this new weapon to maximize the damage he can do?

Devin Funchess was one of the two new players that the Colts signed in the offseason. He was signed to address the problem of not having enough good wide receivers. He was signed to only a one year deal though. So how can the Colts maximize that one year?

First off, use his size. Funchess is a big target at 6’4 225lbs. That is the biggest thing with him. He could be used as a red zone target for sure. Last season the Colts’ biggest red zone threat was Eric Ebron, and he was pretty much the only one. Funchess should help with that right away.

Funchess can also be used on third downs as well. Being such a big guy, it’s hard for defenders to keep themselves between him and the ball. If there are 3rd and 6’s or 3rd and 8’s, he could be a guy Andrew Luck looks to throw the ball too with being such a big target.

One thing that is concerning is Funchess’ catch rate. His catch percentage for his career is only 51.8%. To put that in perspective, T.Y. Hilton‘s catch percentage last year was 63.3%. That is one of the things that has help Funchess back in his career. The Colts certainly don’t need any more receivers with drop problems.

But another way to help Funchess succeed is to run some short rub routes. Doing that allows Funchess to get separation and get some easy catches to get him into a rhythm. Then he can get some yards after the catch and show off his speed.

dark. Next. Colts set up for a better start than last year

This is a one year experiment with Funchess. If he plays well, he could be back next year. If he doesn’t the Colts will move on in a heartbeat.
