Robert Mathis no longer a part of Colts’ staff
By Ryan Stano
The pass-rushing great is no longer a full-time member of the Colts’ staff. He has decided to do other things full-time.
The all-time sack leader in Colts history is now leaving the staff. Robert Mathis is no longer on the Colts staff full-time. He was employed as a pass rush specialist. Now he will be doing something else in Westfield, working at a sports performance facility.
While Mathis will be in Westfield most of the time, he will still help the Colts every now and then. He has built good relationships with the people on defense. He is a valuable asset for the team, and him still doing this part-time is a great resource to have for a young team.
Mathis had done a good job with the team in the past in teaching them pass rushing concepts. The Colts were able to increase their sack production while he was employed. They actually were in the top half of the league in sacks last season, despite no one player dominating in that category.
While this is a loss for the Colts, it isn’t a huge one. The Colts have some veteran pass rushers now who know what it takes at this level. They have players like Jabaal Sheard and Justin Houston who have been around the league for awhile and know what it takes.
It will be interesting to see how well the team is able to rush the passer this season in Mathis’ absence. Based on the talent that they have, it shouldn’t be an issue at all.
