The Colts made some moves with the coaching staff today, bringing back legendary offensive line coach Howard Mudd as an offensive assistant.

Maybe Frank Reich had a good reason to get rid of his offensive line coach. The Colts got rid of Dave DeGuglielmo right after the season ended. Now they bring back former offensive line coach Howard Mudd as an offensive assistant to help the offensive line.

Mudd was the offensive line coach for the Colts during their glory years. He was with the team from 1998-2009. Mudd is officially a senior offensive assistant, but there is no doubt that he will have his hands all over the offensive line.

That wasn’t the only coaching move that the Colts have made. They also announced Klayton Adams as an offensive line coach and elevated Marcus Brady to quarterbacks coach. But there is no doubt that Mudd will have his fingerprints all over the offensive line.

Along with Chris Strausser, Mudd will take over an offensive line that was much improved over the previous years. The line only gave up 18 sacks last season, which was a league-low. They take over a group that is very young and will still develop into even better players.

This is somewhat of a surprising move. Mudd hasn’t been involved in the organization in over a decade. But that is also when the offensive line started to slip. Once Mudd left, the offensive line play was never quite the dominant force it was when he was there.

The good news is that Mudd won’t have to do anything drastic with this group. He can just let them keep developing and doing what they have been doing.
