Eagles’ lack of WR depth could help Colts
By Ryan Stano
The Colts play the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday in their third game of the year. But they may have caught the defending Super Bowl champs at a good time.
The Colts are no stranger to injuries. They had to deal with a lot of them a year ago, and it submarined their season. But the Eagles are dealing with injuries of their own, with most of them being at the wide receiver position.
Mike Wallace was just placed in injured reserve. Alshon Jeffery is still recovering from an injury as well. So they had to sign Jordan Matthews to give them some sort of depth. They will only have four active receivers for Sunday’s game.
This could play into the Colts’ favor. It will be Carson Wentz‘s first start of the year, and he won’t have many weapons to throw to. It will allow the Colts to cover better and focus on a couple of guys in the passing game. They should be able to focus more on the run.
The Colts defense played well last weekend against Washington. So Philly being low on receivers only makes things that much better for the secondary. Philly will now have to rely on the running game, and Jay Ajayi is hurt too.
Stopping the passing game is only one area that the Colts need to excel in order to win this game. They need to be effective on offense as well. Being good on offense means the Eagles will have to throw the ball more to their ineffective receivers.
The Colts will see who is healthy on Sunday, so they will gameplan as normal. But having some extra players out for Philadelphia can only help Indy.
