Defense is something the Colts have struggled with over the years. But they played fabulously in a 21-9 victory on Sunday. In doing so, they might have found some answers on who should start in the secondary.

The Colts played a great defensive game in Washington. It was their best defensive output in a couple of years. But there was something else about the victory that resonated. They looked like they have found the starting corners who work best.

Pierre Desir started along side Kenny Moore on Sunday. In week 1 it was Nate Hairston alongside Moore. But Desir seemed to be the right call on Sunday. But everyone in the secondary covered very well. They were draped all over receivers down the field.

The most impressive thing about the secondary was that they didn’t get beat deep. They made Alex Smith constantly check the ball down underneath. They dared him to beat them 6 yards at a time. Being sound on the back end allowed the Colts to ramp up the pressure on Smith.

This might be a combination that we see for the rest of the season. Having Moore and Desir start at corner with Clayton Geathers and Malik Hooker at safety. That lineup seems to be the best combination that produces the best results.

They will be tested next week however. They face Philly in Carson Wentz‘s first start of the year. They do have some weapons who can beat them, although their receiving corp is currently hurting with injuries. But the secondary will be tested downfield.

Having a good secondary is what the Colts need. They want to get out to a fast start behind Andrew Luck and the offense and then play with the lead. Having a good secondary doesn’t allow teams to come back and win.
