Andrew Luck to Play in Colts Preseason Opener
By Ryan Stano
Addressing the media today at Colts training camp, head coach Frank Reich announced that the quarterback will play in the first preseason game.
The Colts are almost to the point where they don’t have to give daily Andrew Luck updates anymore. But this one is a relatively big one. Frank Reich announced that Luck will play in the preseason opener against Seattle.
This would be the first game that Luck has played since December of 2016. He clearly needs to work off some of the rust that he has accumulated over the course of the last year and a half. Playing in the first preseason game helps with that.
Don’t expect Luck to play too much in the opener though. Most starting quarterbacks around the league don’t even play in the first preseason game. And if they do, it’s only for a couple of series. Expect that to be the case with Luck. It would be shocking to see him play more than two series.
Luck should probably play in all of the Colts preseason games this year. He needs as much work as he can possibly get. That way he can be ready for the regular season opener. Of course the Colts don’t want to risk another injury in preseason, but they should let him get a decent amount of work in.
Playing in the preseason opener will help the first team offense get used to the new system that they will be playing under. It will allow Luck to feel real game situations and get him used to NFL speed again. You can’t simulate that type of speed in practice.
