It’s not the most exciting part of football, but special teams are extremely important. And special teams are a valuable part of this current Colts squad.

Special teams are often the difference between a team winning and losing. It’s a battle of field position and key points. Field goals add up and can win games at many stretches of the game. This Colts team certainly knows the value of special teams.

Adam Vinatieri is the most obvious member of this unit. He will break the all-time scoring record before next season is through. He has had remarkable consistency ever since he has come to Indianapolis. He also still has the power to make long field goals as well.

Being able to trot out a field goal kicker and know he will deliver is huge. Knowing you can get three points at the end of a drive if it stalls is a massive advantage. The Colts will need that advantage next season, as scoring could still be an issue.

Punting is also a key part of special teams. Rigoberto Sanchez did a great job as a rookie punter last season, and should only be better next year. The ability to pin your opponent deep in their own territory is a key aspect of winning games, and Sanchez can do that well.

The kick-off coverage has always been an issue for the Colts. They always seem to be one of the worst teams in the league in coverage. But last year, they weren’t quite as bad. It needs to continue to improve if they want to keep teams from having good field position.

Punt coverage hasn’t been as big of an issue. The Colts usually do a good job of covering punts and keeping their opponents pinned deep. They should be able to continue to do that next season as well.

Having good special teams can help a team out immensely. The Colts know that, and should be able to get a few wins because of their great units.
