With the 159th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Indianapolis Colts select Northern Iowa Panthers wide receiver Daurice Fountain.
Fountain, a 6’1″, 210 pound wide receiver, was a four year producer for the Northern Iowa Panthers. In the 2017 season, he had 66 receptions, 943 receiving yards, and 12 receiving touchdowns. In his career, he had 150 receptions, 2077 receiving yards, and 23 receiving touchdowns.
Before his senior season, Fountain was not on the radar of many NFL Scouts. However, he was one of the most productive wide receivers in college football last season. The Missouri Valley Conference did not provide the most fierce competition for Fountain, but he proved that he has the qualities necessary to be given a shot in training camp.
The Colts are not very deep at wide receiver, so Fountain should have a shot at immediate playing time. Outside of T.Y. Hilton, the Colts have no proven starter quality wide receivers.
Many Colts fans may have expected general manager Chris Ballard to target a wide receiver in the earlier rounds of the draft because of the loss of Donte Moncrief. However, Ballard has secured a wide receiver who proved in his senior season that he could put up big numbers.
Although he has limited competition at wide receiver, he may struggle to make the roster if he does not prove his talent at wide receiver because he has limited experience as a special teamer. If he is a quick learner, he could stick on the roster until he further develops his abilities.
