The Colts have already traded down once in the draft. They currently own the number six pick as well as more second round picks. But would it benefit the team to trade down again?

The Colts have a number of roster holes that they need to fill. GM Chris Ballard has talked about building the team through the draft. The best way to do that is to acquire a bunch of picks and use them on players that they like.

In order to acquire more picks, the Colts would need to trade further down in the draft. More than likely they would need to trade out of the top ten to get the total amount of picks that they would desire. It would also be unclear who would want to move up to the sixth spot to take the Colts’ pick.

Getting more picks seems like a good idea in theory. It would allow the Colts to acquire young players in bulk that they can groom to fit their system. It also would mean that the team wouldn’t get a top level player with their first round pick.

While drafting more players might sound nice, it is highly unlikely that it would happen. Ballard has been on record saying that any team that would want to trade with them would need to offer a king’s ransom for the Colts to even considering it.

Ballard likes that he can still get a premium player at the sixth pick. Trading down would almost certainly make sure that is no longer the case. The Colts also need a top shelf player that could make an instant impact with the team.

It would be shocking to see the Colts trade down again, but it isn’t out of the realm of possibility. If they do, then they will certainly have a lot more picks to play with.
