As the combine is now upon us, draft speculation is ramping up. At the combine a lot of players have press conferences for the first time since college. Saquon Barkley got a lot of questions from Indy media.

The Colts have the number three pick in the NFL draft. Now that the team has hired a full staff of coaches, it’s time for them to get into the player evaluation phase of the off-season. They need to make the right pick with that high pick.

There has been a lot of speculation on who the Colts are going to take. But there have been multiple signs that they might be leaning towards taking running back Saquon Barkley. The back from Penn State is widely regarded as the best overall prospect in the draft.

Owner Jim Irsay talked a few weeks ago about what kind of prospects they might need. He referenced the fact that they were missing an Edgerrin James type back. He seemed to think that the team needed a playmaker at that position.

Frank Reich in his press conference yesterday mentioned that the Colts were going to part ways with Frank Gore to get younger in the running back position. This might signal that the Colts could draft Barkley as a replacement.

It would be a good fit if the Colts did decide to take Barkley with the number three pick. He could be a good starting running back for them. Marlon Mack would be an excellent backup to Barkley, and the team would have two young backs that would grow together for several years.

The Colts still may not take Barkley. They could take Bradley Chubb or Quenton Nelson instead. But Barkley is the best overall talent in the draft, and if he’s available expect the Colts to take him on draft day.
