Stephen Morris is the only Colts quarterback that has had any success this preseason, and he may be rewarded with some time with the starters on Saturday.
At the beginning of training camp it looked like Stephen Morris was on the roster bubble with a high probability of getting cut before the regular season. That situation lpooked even more likely after he was passed up by undrafted rookie Phillip Walker on the depth chart.
However, Walker and Scott Tolzien have done Morris some favors by playing horribly this preseason.
Tolzien and Walker are a combined 26 of 47 for 213 yards with no touchdowns through the first two games. Their 4.5 yards per pass attempt is a shockingly terrible number, and the offense has not been able to get in a rhythm with either of them under center.
Morris has come in during the fourth quarter in each of the first two preseason games, so his numbers should be taken with a grain of salt when going up against third and fourth-string defenses. However, he’s also playing with lesser talent and he’s been really impressive when he’s been given a chance to play.
He’s completed 24 of 35 pass attempts for 205 yards and a touchdown, and has led both of the Colts’ offensive scoring drives this offseason.
The third preseason game is treated like a regular season game, and it looks like Chuck Pagano is considering giving Stephen Morris a run with the starters.
The Colts know what they have in Scott Tolzien, and it’s not pretty, and Phillip Walker looks totally overwhelmed by the NFL game as a rookie.
Stephen Morris may give the Colts their best shot at competing without Andrew Luck, and he may have a chance to prove it this weekend.
