2017 Positional Preview: Quarterback
By Andrew Ites
The Indianapolis Colts have one of the league’s best QB’s in Andrew Luck, but his health is a major question mark heading into 2017.
After missing the majority of the 2015 season due to various injuries, Andrew Luck had one of the best years of his career in 2016. Luck passed for 4,240 yards at a career-high 7.8 yards per attempt with 31 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
The Colts had to be happy with their investment after they made Luck the highest-paid player in the NFL with a five-year $123 million contract last offseason. However, his injury history is a bit unnerving as Luck heads into the first season of his new contract with another ailment.
Luck has been recovering from offseason shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum, and he has yet to start throwing. The Colts’ organization remains confident that Luck will be ready to go for Week 1 of the regular season, but his inability to throw only a couple of weeks away from the beginning of training camp has to have fans concerned.
With Luck’s questionable health, it’s important for backup Scott Tolzien to get some quality reps with the first team offense in training camp. He wasn’t terrible in his one start last season, passing for 205 yards with 1 TD and 2 INT’s against the Steelers, but he’s not a high-quality long-term sub.
Assuming Luck is good to go, he’ll hope to have a healthy receiving corps after their number-two WR Donte Moncrief missed seven games last season. Moncrief had 7 TD’s in only nine games, and could form one of the NFL’s best wide receiver duos with T.Y. Hilton.
Andrew Luck ranked in the top-10 in passing yards, passing touchdowns, passer rating, and yards per attempt last season silencing any doubts that he was an elite QB. He’s proven he has the talent to carry a team deep into the playoffs, and he’ll have an opportunity to do it again in 2017.
