On Wednesday, the Indianapolis Colts announced that the team will hold joint training camp practices with the Detroit Lions on August 10-11th–leading up to the team’s preseason opener game against one another on Sunday, August 13th, at Lucas Oil Stadium.

These practices will be hosted at the Indiana Farm Bureau Center, but are unfortunately closed to the public.

It’s the second time that the Colts have held joint training camp practices with a team from the NFC North, as Indianapolis most recently have such practices with the Chicago Bears in 2015–before bypassing the option during last year’s training camp.

Obviously, there’s already great familiarity between the Colts and Lions organizations, as not only did the team’s play against one another in last year’s regular season opener, but Detroit head coach Jim Caldwell previously served as the Colts head coach from 2009-11.

Joint training camp practices are a good way to gauge where a team is at entering the preseason and also provides an opportunity to ‘grind’ against new opponents, as it can get a bit monotonous practicing against just your teammates all summer (not to mention heated).

It certainly can’t hurt the Colts players, as they look to prepare and improve for this year’s regular season.
