According to Colts.com’s Kevin Bowen, Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay said at the NFL annual meetings in Phoenix, Arizona, that the team plans on being cautious with star quarterback Andrew Luck’s recovery from offseason surgery on his ‘golden’ right throwing shoulder.

Given that Luck is the Colts franchise player and clearly indispensable, it makes sense that the team’s brass has no plans to rush his return back onto the field this offseason:

Russo-USA TODAY Sports“We are not going to be rushing him,” said Irsay at the NFL annual meetings. “We are going to make sure, obviously, that the shoulder has to be ready and the doctors are going to give full approval before he starts putting real reps on it and that sort of thing.”“This is going to be a huge benefit in the long run. We really feel that he’s going to be completely healed for the season, and he’s going to have a great season. Chris (Ballard) and Chuck (Pagano) have talked and we are going to make sure, if we need an extra arm in camp, as we start doing our work, we will be prepared for that.”"

It’s worth noting that Luck’s shoulder is no longer in a sling (per his latest book club update), meaning he’s making clear progress in his recovery–having donned one earlier this offseason.

Right now, the Colts have backups Scott Tolzien and Stephen Morris, indicating that it’s entirely possible (presumably even likely) that the team looks to bring in another arm for their OTA’s and perhaps even the early portion of their training camp.

Either way, it looks like Luck is making clear progress in his recovery and should be ready to go for his team’s regular season opener regardless of when his actual return is.

No rush by the Colts!
