3. Outside Linebacker
In the preseason opener, the Colts are highly unlikely to play veteran pass rushers Robert Mathis and Trent Cole–if at all. The tandem doesn’t need the additional experience and would be better served saving their legs for the regular season.
It’s a great opportunity for some of the Colts younger pass rushers–specifically 7th round pick Trevor Bates to show the coaching staff what they can do and make a lasting impression.
The Colts defense desperately needs an infusion of youth, as well as some rotational pass rushers to throw in the mix with Mathis and Cole which means that Bates could be a name to watch if he can deliver an inaugural impact performance.
The 6’2″, 245 pound Maine linebacker led the Black Bears with 7.5 sacks last season and finished with 19 career collegiate sacks. He’s a bit of a small school developmental project, but has already made his mark early on in training camp:
Joining Bates is a pair of promising undrafted rookie pass rushers Curt Maggitt and Ron Thompson–both of whom could push for additional reps with a strong showing.
