<p>The 6’2″, 245 pound outside linebacker was a senior standout for the Black Bears, recording 57 total tackles including 14.5 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks–primarily playing defensive end.</p> <p>He’ll likely be asked to convert to a 3-4 pass rushing outside linebacker in new defensive coordinator <strong>Ted Monachino</strong>‘s scheme. He theoretically has the size, as well as the speed as he ran a 4.72 forty at his pro day.</p> <p>With this year’s draft class being incredibly thin at pass rusher, the Colts selected a potential developmental diamond in the rough from an unheralded football program.</p> <p>Bates definitely fills a need, but it’s unclear whether he’ll be able to successfully transition to an impact pass rusher at the next level.
