Report: Colts Met with Cal Safety Stefan McClure
The Indianapolis Colts have reportedly met with Cal safety Stefan McClure:
The 5’11”, 203 pound senior safety recorded 61 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, 3 pass breakups, a sack, and a fumble recovery that he returned 45 yards for a touchdown in 13 games. He earned All-Pac 12 honorable mention for the first time.
Additionally, he received Cal’s Joe Roth Award this past season, which is given to the player who best exemplifies courage, sportsmanship, and attitude.
Since his sophomore year, McClure is the only Cal player in the team’s history to serve as a captain for 3 seasons.
Overall, he played in 37 games for the Golden Bears including 28 starts, having missed the entire 2012 season due to an injury, and then 7 and 4 games as a sophomore and junior respectively.
While McClure’s collegiate career was hindered by injuries, he did play in all of Cal’s 13 games this past season.
The 5th-year safety possesses exceptional intangibles, but his lengthy injury history will likely make him either a late round draft pick or priority undrafted free agent.
Of course, the Colts could use additional safety depth, as the team lost last season’s starting safety Dwight Lowery to the San Diego Chargers in free agency. While Clayton Geathers seems poised to start, it negatively impacts their remaining depth.
It’s worth noting that backup safety and special teams standout Colt Anderson visited the Buffalo Bills on Friday as well, so the Colts could be in the market for backup safeties come draft day.
A safety prospect such as McClure could theoretically provide depth to the back of the team’s secondary.
