Report: Georgia OLB Jordan Jenkins Has Workout with Colts Friday
According to both NFL.com’s Rand Getlin and Georgia beat writer Jason Butt, the Indianapolis Colts had a workout with Georgia outside linebacker Jordan Jenkins on Friday:
The 6’3″, 259 pound outside linebacker was having a productive senior year for the Bulldogs until a combination of groin and hip injuries limited him throughout the remainder of the season.
Still, despite the injuries, Jenkins managed 59 tackles–including 10.5 tackles for loss, as well as 4 sacks in 11 games as a co-defensive captain for the Bulldogs defense.
While Jenkins is more of a natural run stuffer than sackmaster, he does over some pass rush on the outside. Still, he projects to be more of an “edge-setting” outside linebacker more in the mold of current Colts starting outside linebacker Erik Walden (via his NFL.com draft profile):
"SOURCES TELL US“I think he’s a plug-and-play second-rounder who can play in an odd or even front. He reminds me of the type of guy Ozzie (Newsome) looks for with his toughness.” — AFC Director of Scouting"
"NFL COMPARISONNick PerryBOTTOM LINEThree-year starter who has played both outside linebacker spots in the Bulldogs 3-4 defense. With Jenkins length and outstanding power on the edge, he is a natural fit as an edge-setting strongside 3-4 outside linebacker in the pros. Jenkins may not be viewed as dangerous enough as a pass rusher to warrant a first round pick, but he’s a safe pick whose toughness and football IQ make him an early starter candidate."
The Colts do appear comfortable with Walden setting the edge for next season. However, the veteran outside linebacker turns 31 years old in August and is entering the last year of his Colts contract.
It’s always possible that that the team could look to groom his long-term successor by drafting an intriguing outside linebacker prospect such as Jenkins to play a season behind him before eventually taking over starting duties.
Therefore, it’s quite possible that they’ve seen a lot of collegiate film of both Jenkins and Floyd already. It’ll be interesting to see if the Colts actually like Jenkins enough to call his name come draft time, as he’s currently projected to be a Round 2-4 pick.
