According to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport, the Indianapolis Colts have a visit scheduled with free agent cornerback Patrick Robinson on Wednesday:

Originally a 1st round pick of the New Orleans Saints in 2010, the 28 year old cornerback played last season with the San Diego Chargers, recording 49 tackles, 1 forced fumble, and 1 interception in 10 starts.

Of course, the Colts coaching staff should be very familiar with Robinson, as new defensive backs coach Greg Williams served as the Chargers assistant secondary coach this past season.

Not to mention, last season’s returning Chargers defensive coordinator John Pagano is Colts head coach Chuck Pagano‘s younger brother.

The 5’11”, 191 pound Robinson would be a prudent cornerback signing for the Colts if the price is right. He would serve as an instant upgrade to last year’s starter, Greg Toler, who is unlikely to be re-signed as a free agent himself.

For perspective, Robinson was Pro Football Focus 30th rated cornerback this past season with a +79.4 grade overall, which was just one spot behind the Colts very own Vontae Davis–who had a bit of a down season for his high standards.

Meanwhile, Toler had an overall grade of 36.4 overall, which was the 113th worst among 119 qualifiers.

Therefore, it seems like a foregone conclusion that the Colts would be getting a significant upgrade at starting cornerback on the other side of Davis by signing Robinson.

Right now, the team has just Darius Butler, who’s best suited as a slot cornerback, and 2nd-year pro D’Joun Smith who saw his rookie season cut short because of a lingering knee injury.

As such, Robinson would provide them a proven quality starting cornerback to start on the outside.
