According to The Big Lead’s Jason McIntyre, Indianapolis Colts soon-to-be free agent quarterback Matt Hasselbeck will be hanging up the cleats and joining ESPN’s Sunday Countdown in place of legendary Chicago Bears head coach Mike Ditka:

While earlier reports indicated that Hasselbeck intended on resuming his NFL career, the 40 year old quarterback may be retiring after all.

It comes just a week after the Colts recently made it known that the team planned on parting ways with Hasselbeck after 3 seasons with the team.

It’s ironic that Hasselbeck could ultimately retire right after fellow 1998 NFL Draftees Peyton Manning and Charles Woodson recently rode off into the sunset–the last active players of their renowned draft class:

Hasselbeck may have found a colder market than he anticipated in the league’s “tampering period”, or he simply does not want to re-locate at this late stage of his playing career. Taking the time to enjoy life with family and friends instead after 18 grueling NFL seasons by taking a far less time consuming television gig.

There’s no question however that Hasselbeck would make for a great football analyst, as he’s always been highly regarded by the media in the locker room for his honesty, personability, and ability to articulate.

Whatever the case may be, we wish Hasselbeck the best in his future endeavors, as he was always a standup individual playing for the Colts and a true “Horseshoe guy”.
